The Basilica is an example of pisan-romanesque style. Considering the majesty of the building, we are allowed to suppose that the project of the Basilica was made by a great architect even though we still do not know his identity. It was built just in the place where in Roman times the river Arno flowed into the sea. According to the tradition in 42 a. C. St. Peter stopped here during his way to reach Rome. The Basilica is considered the starting point from which the Christianity developed in Pisa.
Inside, there are several frescos that belong to different ages. This bears witness to the constant effort artists made in order to keep the ascendancy of the Basilica. We have to underline the importance of the frescoes representing pope’s portraits, with the same style of those we can see in St. Paul’s Church in Rome
