The Cathusian Monastery

It was founded in 1366 but its present appearance is due to several restorations made during the XVI and XVII centuries. The Carthusian monks had to observe strict rules, among them, the pray and the silence were the most important ones. It was suppressed by Napoleone but it was later reused until 1970 by the monks.

The monastery overlooks a forecourt and in the middle of the façade stands out a XVII th century staircase.

Inside we can see several frescoes representing stories from the Bible and from the monks’order.

The monastery also houses the Museum of Natural Science which belongs to the University of Pisa.
